2020 Day 179 – Deuteronomy 5-6 and Proverbs 27

As kids I’m sure we all heard the saying “sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me”.  God’s word tells us something different.  “Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth. As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to kindle strife. The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.” (Proverbs 26:20-22)  James also compares words spoken to fire.  “Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!” (James 3:5)  The power of our words does not have to be used in a negative way.  “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.” (Ephesians 4:29)
